What is a Maqui Berry?

The Maqui Berry shrub is an evergreen belonging to the Elaeocarpaceae family, which can be found in Chile, in the central valley and also the Andean mountainside. The species prospers in heights from sea level up to 8,600 feet.

It prefers organic rich soils, slightly acidic and well drained. It can be found in low canopies or colonizing open spaces in communities.

The fruit is a black brilliant berry of about 4 – 6mm of diameter that ripens in late summer or early autumn. It is edible and used widely by the locals for its medicinal properties and other uses.
